Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett 'excited' to compete against No. 3 pick Drake Maye

Nobody, including veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, was surprised when the New England Patriots used the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on QB Drake Maye.

Brissett understands the NFL is a business, but he isn't just going to hand the rookie the starting job, either.

"That's all out of my control, so I don't really worry about that," Brissett said, via ESPN's Mike Reiss. "I'm excited to have him on the team and the other guys as well that we drafted and picked up. I think it's gonna be good. Competition brings out the best in all of us, so I'm excited about that part."

Brissett has a ton of starting experience, but Maye will still have a good shot at being the starting quarterback come Week 1. The UNC product has thrown for 7,929 yards, 62 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in the past two seasons.

However, Maye is a bit raw, with just two years of starting experience. That's why head coach Jerod Mayo isn't giving anyone the job yet and hopes Maye's focus is on taking advantage of veterans, like Brissett, in the locker room.

"Coming in as a rookie, hopefully he's a sponge," Mayo said, via NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe. "We're going to compete all spring. We're going to compete during training camp, and the best player will start."

Only time will tell who that player will be, but Brissett has had a great reputation with every team he's played for in his eight-year NFL career. So, it would be surprising if he wasn't willing to help Maye in any way he can.

Maye, of course, has the starting job on his mind but plans to learn as much as he can from Brissett in the meantime.

"I think [starting] is obviously the goal for myself and any quarterback coming into the NFL," Maye said, via Audacy's WEEI 93.7. "But also, I just think I want to get in there and learn. Learn from Jacoby [Brissett], learn from the older guys around there and put my best foot forward."
