Lions GM Brad Holmes drops eye-opening Jahmyr Gibbs workload prediction

When the 2024 NFL season begins, we know three things for sure about the Detroit Lions:

  1. The Lions will be one of the trendiest Super Bowl picks among both fans and analysts of the game
  2. Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Penei Sewell will enter the year as three of the highest paid players ever at their respective positions
  3. Pending good health all season long, you can expect that Jahmyr Gibbs will overtake David Montgomery as the “lead back” in the Lions’ backfield

And hey, if you don’t want to believe me, you can take the word of Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who had this to say about his team’s backfield during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show on Monday afternoon.

“Yeah I definitely would expect him [Gibbs] to see more of a load, but you know David Montgomery will still be here too and we love that one two punch of him and David. Just speaking him specifically, him being a rookie last year, even when he had some pops in that KC game, in that opener, I was watching, and like you know, he’s still trying to get the feel of the game. He was playing very fast and he actually kind of needed to slow down a little bit and he openly admitted that you know like, ‘I just had to slow it down a little bit, I was kind of going too fast,’ which he was.

“But once he got that sweet spot and it was about right there, kind of saw a little bit in the Ravens game which unfortunately, we didn’t show up very well for that game, but that’s when you started seeing some glimpses of ‘I think It’s coming. I think it’s coming.'”

The Upside of Jahmyr Gibbs

The game against the Ravens that Brad Holmes referenced was played on October 22. The Ravens ran away with a 38-6 win, but the Lions’ rookie running back impressed against one of the league’s best defenses, carrying the ball 11 times for 68 yards and 1 touchdown, while also hauling in nine receptions for 58 yards. From that point on, Gibbs did seem to make some sort of leap. Over the final ten weeks of the regular season, Gibbs ran for 698 yards and 9 touchdowns on 132 carries… an impressive 5.3 yards per carry. In comparison, over the final nine games of the season, Montgomery ran for 630 yards and 7 touchdowns on 125 carries.

Last year, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery combined for 401 carries for 1,960 yards and 23 rushing touchdowns, giving the Lions arguably the best backfield in the NFL. But there’s a reason why Detroit selected Gibbs with the 12th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft… in time, he’ll be the primary option in the Lions’ ground attack.

Gibbs made multiple plays throughout the season in which he flashed the sort of power, speed, balance, and vision that would warrant using such a high draft pick on a running back. He’s also a much better option as a pass-catcher than Montgomery, who has never been much of a receiving threat throughout his career. It makes perfect sense why the Lions would want to get Gibbs more involved, but as an owner of David Montgomery in a fantasy football dynasty league, this update stings quite a bit.
